Know what you don’t know. It’s a semi-common phrase that you hear people say as something you should recognize in yourself. It’s important to know what you don’t know so you can - what? Why is it important? Well, it’s important so you understand where your knowledge gaps are and how to fill them. That might mean you spend some extra time learning about a subject. Or it might mean that you assign this task to someone else. It also might mean that you never learn about a subject and rely on a trusted source to be the expert on a subject whenever you may need.

Someone once told me, it’s ok to not know the answer as long as you know where to go or who to ask to get the answer. That perspective helps to shape how we as Global, approach our customers.

Aircraft cleaning is a 2D image in a 3D world. What I mean by that is, on the surface it’s very simple - I mean it’s only cleaning - how hard could that be right? People conjure up different images of cleaning; be it a spray bottle and rag or a hose and scrub brush or a meticulous application of a protectant. In general, the image of “cleaning an aircraft” is simple. Everyone can image what that looks like. Reality however, is different.

COVID-19 Notes

During the early stages of the shutdown, a lot of flying just stopped. There were days where we saw only a fraction of the daily cleanings that we are used to. At the same time, our customers were rushing to find solutions to protect their customers, crews, and aircraft for the flights they were still performing and in anticipation of whatever flying may return. 

We quickly worked with our vendor network to assess the status and availability of disinfecting products that were both effective and safe to use on board an aircraft. We even helped to source some products for those vendors who were having a difficult time purchasing more products. 

One of the first issues we saw were people grabbing household cleaning products to use inside their aircrafts. Products like Clorox and Lysol, while effective at killing germs, are not great for aircraft surfaces. They can break down protective clear-coats, sap moisture out of porous soft-goods products like leather, and slowly deteriorate various products and surfaces inside the cabin. Cleaning and disinfecting a multi-million-dollar aircraft takes a specialized approach. We first worked with our vendor network and then with our customers to offer various solutions and products from a one-time disinfect to product applications that have published holder over time of weeks and months. These product applications along with increased cleanings helped to ensure that the aircraft still being operated during the pandemic were as clean and as healthy as they could be.
